There are now 10 more TADSAW Service Dog Teams

service dogGood Morning!!!!  There are now 10 more TADSAW Service Dog Teams in the country and a Masonic Lodge award presented. But first things first.

TADSAW reached a milestone on May 6th, in North Carolina when Trainer Kim passed Brian & ABBY on their Public Access Temperament Test becoming TADSAW Service Dog Team TSD0250. Then on May 7th, in Chicago area, Trainer Cheralyn, formerly of the Camp Lejeune area, had similar PATT results with Team Andy & RED TSD0251.  And then on May 13th, it became a free-for-all to see where it would end!!! Starting off was Joey & SEVEN TSD0252 trained by Randy in Louisiana.

Then in San Antonio, Ricardo & MADDUX TSD0253; Audrey & CYMA  TSD0254; Michelle & PO TSD0255; Morgan & NICO TSD0256; Tom & AURORA TSD0257; Samantha & SIMON TSD0258; all trained by Brent.

And to round out the day, Brent & JASON TSD0259 in Oklahoma with trainer Vicki, also her first Team to be certified.

Just a brief note, both Service Dogs started their careers as rescue shelter residents, prior to meeting their Veterans. Andy & RED TSD0251 are the first graduates of the TADSAW program in Illinois and represent the 38th Vietnam Veteran to ‘finally return home’.

Congratulations to the 10 newest Service Dog Teams and Good Luck as they move forward with their life, their families, in their  neighborhoods and in their communities.

So far in 2014, TADSAW has 61 accredited Service Dog Teams, and more Teams in-training all over the Country – WOW!!! And since the beginnings in August 2010, there are now 259 different communities with a TADSAW Service Dog Team living and taking part. Now that is a big WOW!!

Moving on…. The Grand Masonic Lodge of Texas presented me with the Community Builder Award, on Saturday May 3rd,  in appreciation of distinguished service and personal contributions to the Community of San Antonio, Texas, with the founding of the TADSAW program, and the other communities served. This award was presented jointly by 4 Masonic Lodges in the San Antonio area. It was a very humbling experience and honor to accept the Award, as the true Builders of the community now have a canine ‘Battle Buddy‘ and can go back out and be productive. Joining me at the dinner was TADSAW co-founder Patsy Swendson, TADSAW Service Dog Teams Henry & KENZIE TSD0116, Ed & TC TSD0140 and Jimmy & SMOKY TSD0194, and Team Anthony & MACK (still in-training!!).  I appreciated their being with me on this special night and each one spoke about TADSAW in their own special way. I am still trying to figure out why the Masonic Lodges chose me!!!! And I accepted the Award on behalf of TADSAW and all of the wounded warriors in the program.

A sad note was conveyed to me, this past Saturday, prior to sending out this message.  I was informed that a San Antonio Veteran of the Afghanistan War, who was an Entered Apprentice Mason, had committed suicide without the benefit of learning more about programs that can save a Life. Did he fall thru the cracks?? NO, he was not provided enough options by the powers that be, the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs, to seek assistance for the Post Traumatic Stress  that consumed his life. Now, he will be remembered this holiday as one of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Our Country at a time of War.

Each day the list grows longer of applications being sent out and completed ones being returned. The number of Disabled Veterans and Active Duty being added to the training list keeps increasing.  AND TADSAW needs your assistance NOW more than ever. Please remember TADSAW at this time of the year and make a donation to the program.

Twenty Two veterans die each day, and we all can make a difference, by giving to organizations, any organization, that assists Our Veterans.

Have a safe Holiday….

Greetings – July 4th should remind us all of the sacrifice our forefathers made from TADSAW

TADSAW
July 4th

Good Morning!!! As you awake on July 4th and every day this weekend, it reminds us of the promise that America’s Forefathers made assuring every person’s right to Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness, and the Nation’s military to protect those rights. But have those same rights protected by the military service members been given back to them or taken away once they return home?? That is the question of the month!!!! Anyways lets look what has happened during the month of June from TADSAW.

TWENTY- ONE new TADSAW Service Dog Teams were accredited when they passed the TADSAW Public Access Temperament Test during the month of June and represented 9 different states!!! Congratulations and Good Luck to the following Teams:

Chris & GRAYSON: TSD0264 – trained by Melissa of KY; Michael & LEVI: TSD0265 – trained by Leah of TN;
Chris & ROY: TSD0266 – trained by Randy of LA; Matthew & CHANCE: TSD0267 – trained by Derrick of NC;
Bart & CHILI: TSD0268 – trained by Miriam of NC ; Barbra & BAILEY: TSD0269 – trained by Brent of SATX;
Richard & GUNNER: TSD0270 -trained by Sherrie of MA; John & SPARKPLUG: TSD0271 – trained by Leah of TN;
Michael & BUDDY: TSD0272 – trained by Leah of TN; Jose & ROXY: TSD0273 – trained by Jackie of CO;
James & MARLEY: TSD0274 – trained by Michelle of DFW; Lisa & DANTE: TSD0275 – trained by Cheralyn of IL;
Kent & SAMSON: TSD0276 – trained by Tony of TX; Benjamin & BEAU:TSD0277 – trained by David of NC;
Johnny & LIBERTY: TSD0278 – trained by Sara of AL; Charles & FRENCHIE: TSD0279 – trained by Sandhya of TX;
Brandie & MAGGIE: TSD0280 – trained by Sandhya of TX; Lance & ROOSTER: TSD0281 – trained by Sandhya of TX;
Jesse & BIG D: TSD0282 – trained by Jessica of TX; Jesse & JINX: TSD 0283 – trained by Jessica of TX; and
Ken & ANNIE: TSD0284 – trained by Phyllis of FL.

Special Congratulations to Ken & ANNIE TSD0284, s they also became the 39th Vietnam Veteran Team to pass the PATT. Finally we can say “Welcome Home and Thank You for your sacrifices and service to Our Nation” which should have been 40+years ago.

Several of the Trainers accredited their first Service Dog Teams. This group includes Miriam of NC, Tony of TX, David of NC and Phyllis of FL. Congratulations and a job well done to each and everyone of the TADSAW Dog Training Teams. All of you make this program a real success and take care of the needs of the Veterans and their Service Dogs.

June 2014 was an exciting month with 225 applications being sent out to individuals, and an amazing 95 returned completed and ready to start training. So far the totals in 2014 thru the end of June are 1116 applications sent out compared to 593 for the same period in 2013. There have been 86 TADSAW Service Dog Teams accredited since the beginning of 2014. A total of 450 Teams are currently in-training or awaiting a rescue dog to start training. And that means one thing!!! More Money is needed to continue the training of these Teams to the tune of about $750,000. when all is said and done. BUT there is still six months to go in 2014!!!! How high will the totals reach??

A sorry note to all the good things occurring. TADSAW lost 3 canine ‘Battle Buddies’ during June 2014. Two of the Dogs were in-training with their Veterans, and one had already achieved Service Dog status. BENNY TSD0007 will be sadly missed by his buddy, Mitch, and all of us in TADSAW.

Mitch is actually the one in July 2010, that contacted Penny’s From Heaven Foundation’s (PFHF) founder Patsy about getting Service Dog training for BENNY, due to Mitch’s PTSD. But PFHF was only a therapy dog program, and could not assist Mitch and BENNY. It was about a week later that another Active Duty wounded warrior made the statement “I wish my dog could do that” -learn how to be quiet and obedient.. and the words that flowed from my mouth was “Train a Dog – Save a Warrior”!!! And that was how TADSAW was born four years ago this month.

SO Happy Anniversary-Birthday TADSAW. And if you are compelled, please send a donation to help pay for training sessions, vests, t-shirts for the graduates and celebrate 4 great years.

Have a safe and Happy Fourth of July Holiday weekend…..

4 Service Dogs Teams Accredited in Austin

service dogsGood Morning!!!! Finally, Spring 2014 has arrived, but Winter’s still showing up in some areas of the Country. March 2014 has been unbelievable, especially since my house guests have arrived, ALL 12 of them!!!! Well, this weekend 2 or 3 will be going to their foster homes to begin the journey towards Veterans’ Day 11-11 for the 11 puppies. Hopefully, this little ‘experiment’ will be successful and rewarding to the 11 Veterans and their families with their ‘Battle Buddy‘ candidates.   On March 20th, a special day for my Brother and Aunt and a Ft. Hood Trainer,  marked the accrediting of 4 TADSAW Service Dogs Teams in the Austin area, for a new Trainer with her first Teams. Sandhya was very proud of her Veterans and their ‘Battle Buddies’ as they ‘took’ the TADSAW Public Access Temperament Test (PATT) at the Cabela’s Outdoor World in Buda, Texas.  The bond between Veteran and Dog was an amazing sight. The TADSAW philosophy of “Together you train to hone your skills and Bond as a Team’ was truly evident. Please visit the Facebook page to see the Service Dogs Team’s photos.   Congratulations and Good Luck to those 4 Teams: Jeremy & WOODHOUSE TSD0225; Stacey & FANCY TSD0226; Floyd & LITTLE BIT TSD0227; and Billy & GIZMO TSD0228.

And Congratulations & Good Luck to the other Service Dogs Teams that passed the TADSAW PATT in Colorado a few days later. James Ryan & MIA TSD0229 with Trainer Jackie, and Noel & CHIEF TSD0230 with Trainer Joe, his first Service Dogs Team to graduate
Floyd & LITTLE BIT TSD0228 and Noel & CHIEF TSD0230 are the 37th and 38th Vietnam Veterans Teams, respectively, to come Home from the War.  Special Congratulations to both of them.   So far over 100 applications have been sent out during March, and over 60 have been completed and returned. At this rate, TADSAW could have over 1000 Service Dogs Teams in-training during 2014!!! WOW – and this is where I need to quote the Beatles, during their 50th anniversary arrival.
service dogsDuring the months of February and March, TADSAW had several donors that supported a Service Dogs Team or two or three or four. Thank You to the Stevens, the Harpers, the Stitchers, the North Carolina Church, the Colemans , the Raleigh Hot Cocoa Stand, and a Tennessee WalMart store to name a few.. But there were many, many small donations that combined to support a Service Dogs Team or Two!! And those are just as importantTOO!!!!   HELP, I NEED SOMEBODY…. HELP, NOT JUST ANYBODY…. HELP, YOU KNOW I NEED SOMEONE NOW!!! And hopefully that someone is YOU!!!!! It is going to take a lot of MONEY to be able to train all of these Service Dogs Teams, BUT, and there is always a BUT somewhere. But 1000 Service Dogs Teams represents almost 3 suicides daily among the Nation’s Veteran population. That could mean that in 2015, the statistics might drop to under 20 suicides daily!!!! Not just from TADSAW’s participation, but with every other Service Dogs organization being involved.   BUT, there’s that ‘nasty’ word again…..and the refrain becomes HELP. I NEED SOME MONEY…. HELP, NOT JUST ANY MONEY…HELP, I NEED SOME MONEY NOW!!!
Please help TADSAW with raising funds for all the Teams that are in-training, about to start training, and those that will be applying and starting in the next several months. It takes a village to raise a child, and it will take a Nation to save the lives of its wounded warriors and patriots.
So far, 4 puppies of the TADSAW ELEVEN have made their way into foster homes in preparation of the BIG DAY, November 11th “11-11“, when they will be paired with 11 Veterans to begin training for the TADSAW Service Dogs program. And that still is saving 22 lives!!!Over the next several week the remaining 7 puppies will be going to foster homes also, which will make me a very happy and relieved person.
You can follow the progress of the Fantastic ELEVEN on the Facebook page. Watch for photos of Ollie, Maverick, Major, Gunny, Bodie, Layla, Shadow, Luna, Abby, Sam and Val as they grow and nurture in the families preparing them for when duty calls.
Thank You all for your continued assistance and support of TADSAW.
Have a great week…….

Eighteen Teams now wear the TADSAW Service Dogs Patch on their vest!

service dogsGood Morning!!! WOW!!! I just realized that I have gone thru a solid month of not sending out the WOW Moments. It is now March 2014, and I am trying to figure out what happened to February and how I missed it. There is so much to write about what has transpired since the last correspondence. Well, it appears  I will be rushing in like the Lion, but I doubt going out like a Lamb!!!   First of all, Congratulations to all of the new TADSAW Service Dogs Teams that have been gone thru the program and became accredited. Eighteen Teams can now wear the TADSAW Service Dogs Patch on their vest, of which 4 Vietnam Veterans have arrived safely home. The Service Dogs Teams and their Trainers are listed below:
     Sean & DREW TSD0207 – Trainer Randy in Louisiana;  Kristofer & CISSY TSD0208 – Trainer Leah in Tennessee,
     Cindy & TEX TSD0209 – Trainer Leah;   Harold & ROXANNE TSD 0210 – Trainer Leah; Noel & RANDALL TSD0211       Trainer Colleen of DC;  Christopher & BANDANNA TSD0212 – Trainer Michelle of Fort Worth; Dustin & MATTIS
    TSD0213 – Trainer Michelle; Jim & GYPSY TSD0214 – Trainer Michelle;  Will & SARGE TSD0215 – Trainer Michelle;
    Dawn & CABELA TSD0216 – Trainer Matthias of Oklahoma;  Ricardo & JOHN DOE TSD0217 – Trainer Leah; Randy
    & SADIE TSD0218 – Trainer Randy;  Mikki & SCOUT TSD0219 – Trainer Monique of Arizona – Her FIRST!! Andrea &
    & SAMANTHA TSD0220 – Trainer Carolyn of San Antonio; Richard & RUFUS TSD0221 – Trainer Carolyn; Johanna &
    TIKVAH TSD0222 – Trainer Carolyn;  Erin & GRACIE TSD0223 – Trainer Carolyn; and Richard & LASSIE TSD0224
    Trainer Brent of San Antonio.
service dogsThere were several firsts. One is that Mikki & SCOUT TSD0219 are in Arizona, and it is Monique’s first Service Dogs Team. And Richard & LASSIE TSD0224 traveled to Texas for the winter and are the first TADSAW Service Dogs Team in Maine, upon their return home.
Once again, Thanks to all of the TEAMS involved, the Veterans, the Service Dogs and the trainers for all of their hard work to get thru the TADSAW PATT and complete the program.  Good Luck to all as they return home to their families, their neighborhoods and into their communities.
So far in 2014, TADSAW has accredited 26 service dogs Teams of the total 224 Service Dogs Teams, of which 36 are Vietnam Veterans.
During February 2014, TADSAW sent out 165 applications, of which 62 forms (almost 40%!!!) were completed and received so that training will commence in a few weeks, and another 22 applications were received from previous months. That means more than 80 wounded warriors,  Veteran and Active Duty, will be contacted and start the program. And the need for money continues to increase because of the service TADSAW Service Dogs provides. So tell your friends and foes, neighbors and strangers, or anyone in between about TADSAW’s needs.
And what a way to start March 2014 than with the arrival of Penny and her puppies “The Service Dogs Class of 2015“.
Eleven Puppies for Eleven Veterans in 11 Months starting on Veterans’ Day 2014 – Eleven-Eleven!!!! And now to find the 11 sponsors for the Eleven Teams in-training. But first, the puppies will go into foster homes for socializing and familizing (MY own word!!), in order to get them ready for their future homes with the Veterans. Stay Tuned and Watch the Facebook page “Train a Dog Save a Warrior” for puppy photos and update from now until then. The great Shelter Puppy experiment is beginning right here in San Antonio.
Thank You to those people for advising and inspiring TADSAW Service Dogs to develop the ‘special sauce’ idea, needed to separate TADSAW Service Dogs from the other organizations out there assisting Veterans. TADSAW has done just that on a regular basis. In the words of  Chris Matthews from Hardball, “Don’t get mad. Don’t get even. Get ahead !!” Ant that we do everyday, fighting for the Rights of any Veteran requiring the use of a Service Dogs. There is LIFE in TADSAW Service Dogs!!!!
A Catch Twenty-Two Challenge up-date. The Challenge is going well and tying the recognition to Sports and the personalities will definitely open many peoples’ eyes. As Mandela said, “Sport has the power to change the world. It has the power to inspire. It has the power to unite people in a way that little else does.” So let Uniform Number 22 – help strike out the number of daily suicides, or run a touchdown for the Home Service Dogs Team or race to victory in the fight to save lives. These men and women, the mothers and fathers, the sons and daughters or the sisters and brothers, who safely returned from the combat zone, only to face death alone and at home, shall not go unnoticed.
Thank You for being patient in waiting for the latest edition of the TADSAW WOW Moments. I will try to be more timely reporting these Moments. Meanwhile, the PetSmart partnership, although slow to start is moving forward finally, especially in spite of all the bad weather in many of the areas where the program will start.

‘Penny’ PTSD Dogs was united with a Veteran and picked up Veteran’s PTSD symptoms!

ptsd dogsBRRRR! Good Morning America!!! As another winter storm envelopes the United States. It seems that not only hurricanes have names , but now every winter storm is being named as well. What next tornadoes??   January 2014 has started off very nicely with more Teams passing the TADSAW PTSD Dogs Public Access Temperament Test, this past week.  Congratulations and Good Luck to the following new PTSD Dogs Teams:
                  David & KNUCKLES : TSD0202 and Colleen (Trainer) of Alexandria
                  Ashley & HOPE: TSD0203         and Randy (Trainer) of Shreveport
                  Jennifer & PIXIE: TSD0204        and Crissy (Trainer) of Pittsburgh
                 Felicia & LADYBIRD:TSD0205 – and Caroline (Trainer) of SATx and
                 Lacey & CHANCE:TSD0206   –    and Caroline (AGAIN!!) of SATx
With the Team’s hard work over the past  several months under their trainer’s supervision, their efforts were rewarded by the earning if the title TADSAW PTSD Dogs Service Dog Team.
Now some really interesting news. A couple of weeks ago, on or around January 7th, Patsy, Co-Founder of TADSAW PTSD Dogs, found a Lab-Retriever mix in West Texas that was to be euthanized, if only because she had been picked up by the Animal Control officers. Patsy felt connected to this Yellow Dog because it reminded her of her Therapy Dog, Penny, who was the namesake for the Foundation under which TADSAW PTSD Dogs was started. Long story short – ‘Penny’ was united with a Veteran in West Texas, and immediately picked up on the Veteran’s PTSD symptoms and the roommate’s Diabetes, by alerting her to the low and high blood sugar levels, in order to take action. Well the story does not stop here.
ptsd dogsRather just the beginning, as TADSAW PTSD Dogs had been informed that ‘Penny’ needed to be spayed after having come into the shelter with her puppies. Those puppies must have been tagging along for the free milk program being offered, because by the following Wednesday January 15th, Penny had another 11 healthy newborn puppies at her side. YES – that’s right 11 healthy Lab-cross puppies, and the Facebook followers have been very generous. BUT TADSAW PTSD Dogs does not have a foster program to raise these ‘Future’ Service Dog stars, and because the Program Director has stated more than once a belief that Shelter Dogs make excellent Service Dogs…now I have the chance to prove it. Actually, only 4 of the puppies have to prove the theory correct.
So what started out with one Shelter Rescue Dog, PTSD Dogs saving one Veteran…. it appears that this one special ‘Penny’ will make change and effect a total of 24 lives and families, neighborhoods and communities. WOW- now that is one heck of a difference!!!
And Please do not forget about the CATCH 22 CHALLENGE…. it is easy to speak about and $22. will help save the life of at least one of the 22 Veteran suicides daily… if everyone pitches in.  And that is just the beginning!!! If you want more information, Please call me at (210)643-2901.
Well, that seems to be enough WOW at this moment. I have letters and grants to write, but as I have said before.. this is a very ‘rewarding’ experience… you just have to jump in to realize it!!!
Have a great week and stay warm and comfortable….
